Exercises that develop core muscle strength and proprioception are vital to maintain optimal fitness for all dogs, but especially for canine amputees.
Proprioception (n): 1. Awareness of the body’s position in space, 2. Relating to stimuli connected with the position and movement of the body
The best exercises to do with your Tripawd include unstable surface work and weight bearing activities. These fitness games help with core strengthening, increased range of motion and flexibility, sensory and perceptual stimulation, joint alignment, and balance control. Remember, walking is great for endurance, but it does not build strength.
Take a few minutes out of your day to have fun helping your three legged dog get stronger with these training products, designed specifically for dogs to help build core muscles and improve body control.

FitPAWS Sizing Guidelines
Choosing the correct size FitPAWS Peanut for your dog depends on the size of your dog and what type of exercises you plan on doing.
Core Strengthening
If you plan to use your ball mainly for core conditioning, measure the length of your dog’s stance from the front paw(s) to the rear leg(s) when it is standing. Your dog should be able to stand in a natural stance on the top of the ball without being hunched over.
You can always use a large ball for a small dog but not a small ball for a large dog. If you have more than one dog, choose a size that fits your largest dog. You may find it more comfortable for your own back to work with your dog on a larger/taller ball. Using a larger ball for a small dog also has the added benefit of providing more surface area to work on. [order]
| Dog Stance: | Peanut Size: |
| Up to 20″ Length | 40cm, 50cm, 60cm, 70cm, or 80cm |
| Up to 24″ | 50cm, 60cm, 70cm, or 80cm |
| Up to 30″ | 60cm, 70cm, or 80cm |
| Up to 41″ | 70cm, or 80cm |
| Up to 46″ | 80cm |

Weight Bearing Exercises
For weight bearing activities (with a dog’s forelimbs supported by the ball) choose a peanut that is slightly under your dog’s withers (the highest part of the shoulders where the neck meets the back.) If you need a ball smaller than the 40cm, consider purchasing a FitPAWS Donut. Or, get the 40cm Peanut and decrease the amount of air so the ball is shorter than its maximum height of 40cm. [order]
| Shoulder Height: | Peanut Size: |
| 16″ – 19″ Height | 40cm (15.5″ tall at maximum inflation) |
| 20″ – 23″ | 50cm (19.5″ max.) |
| 24″ – 27″ | 60cm (23.5″ max.) |
| 28″ – 31″ | 70cm (27.5″ max.) |
| 32″+ | 80cm (31.5″ max.) |
| x | |
NOTE: Ball sizes indicated are the maximum inflation height. Never exceed the maximum height printed on the ball. Under-inflating FitPAWS products will increase the exercise difficulty. The firmer the ball, the easier the exercise.

I can’t tell you how much stronger Maggie is now! She just totally amazes me now! She’s come a LONG ways in a year…and with the help of PT rehab work(and Dr. Waldman chats!) she’s got a pretty darn ‘normal’ life now!
