Dog Strollers Help Tripawds Large and Small Get Out

Looking For Dog Wheelchairs?

When Jerry wrote about Xena and Her Big Dog Stroller in June of 2009, he was sharing feedback about the The Solvit HoundAbout Pet Stroller for Big Dogs from Xena and her pack.

NEW: Tripawds Recommends the Burley Bark Ranger Dog Stroller!

NOTE: Solvit no longer makes the HoudAbout stroller.

That post has received numerous comments including this recent reply from Xena’s mom …

Xena is doing really well and I truly can’t say enough about this product. You would think I’m a salesperson for them but I’m not. This “buggy” has made such a difference in our lives. It lets Xena still get out and enjoy life and it allows us to wander a little farther from our home than just a block. Having gone through so many health issues with Xena, if anyone is in the same situation I will be happy to give you any info I have or just simply some support. Thank you all again for your well wishes.

More recently, we met Tri-Pug Maggie and admired her luxurious coach. And how could we forget Shelby’s red wagon?

So we thought we’d share this selection of dog strollers and bicycle trailers available for helping tripawds large and small get out and enjoy life …

  1. One comment on the small dog strollers- I got the one for Maggie specifically so she could get out, and in (with a little help) by herself. I didn’t want to have to lift her in and out.
Something to consider if any of the smaller tripawds are considering a ‘ride’.

    • Thanks for the feedback Karen! We were actually looking for a coach like Maggie’s, but couldn’t find one. What brand is it? Members might like to know where you got it too.

  2. Here is a link to the stroller I bought for Maggie (don’t tell her it says kitty walk in title!).

This may have been the site where I bought it- I don’t remember.

What I really like about it is that both the front and back ‘doors’ open like ramps. Maggie can get out by herself, and in with just a little help. And it is rated for 50 lbs so I can put both pugs in it if needed.

  3. Thanks for the link, never thought of searching for “Kitty” strollers. 🙂

We updated the original post with your recommendation – found it on Buy.com with free shipping! Check out the Double Decker option. Now Maggie and Tani can both travel in style.

  4. I’m shopping around for a stroller/trailer for my 80 pound boy now and came across this one Pet-Trailer-Jogger-Stoller-Combo-Rider that’s more inside my budget (it comes with the stroller kit included). I was just wondering if anyone on this forum had experience with this brand; I can’t seem to find much info about it and there are no user reviews on it.

  5. I see a BIG dog strollers being advertised here but when I try to click the link all I get is small dog stuff. Our Bernese Mountain Dog is about to have a front leg amputation and we are losing it. Not sure what to expect, what to do, how he’ll respond etc. Any comments from people with large breeds (esp if there’s anyone out there with a tripod Berner) I would be most appreciative of any advise. Finding this big dog stroller has already gotten me waaaaaaaay too stressed out. The link provided should go to the product mentioned, right?

  6. Hello. I’m trying to figure out which stroller to buy for my dog. She’s an Aussie/Healer mix. About 47 pounds. We live in the mountains. We’d be walking on unpaved ground. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

  7. I have a 15 pound Boston Terrier that had a front leg amputated about a month ago. He is doing great, but tires quickly, so our long walks (about 30-45 minutes) are out. I am pregnant with our first child due in April and I was trying to find a stroller that might hold both of them without getting an entire double stroller so we can all go for walks when the baby gets here. Does anyone have a suggestion about a stroller that would do that? (I realize it is a little random question, but just thought I would ask!) Thanks!

  8. We have two dogs. One is a very active 19 pound cockapoo and our second dog, who we adopted in February 2013, is a 14.6 pound Lhasa-ish dog with a right front leg amputation. After much comparison shopping, we bought a Dogger, which is a larger stroller designed to accommodate one or two small to medium size dogs. Both dogs have enough room to turn around and lay down. The Dogger website lists the price at $249.00. However, the company owner, who is wonderful, had a refurbished Dogger which she was sold us for $149.00 (with the same warrantee as a new stroller). This is a very high quality stroller/jogger with air filled tires. It does take up a lot of room in our minivan when folded up. We use the Dogger a lot when we take both dogs for walks or on all day outings. We let Maggie walk as long as she is comfortable and put her in the stroller when she becomes tired (or stops to try to remover her carpal brace.) She lets us know when she wants to resume walking. I think it would easily accommodate your dog and a baby in a carrier/seat at least for this spring and through the fall.
I used the Dogger savings to buy a smaller Gen7 pet stroller just for Maggie when she became an animal assisted therapy dog. This brand makes high quality strollers that provide a smooth ride and takes up much less room the car than the Dogger. The stroller is great for walks, all day shopping trips, and attending reading with the dogs events at local libraries and schools. It also places Maggie at just the right height to be petted by nursing home residents whether they are in wheelchairs or beds.
Either way, I could not do without a stroller for Maggie-it vastly improves her quality of life. In addition, I bought a Skip Hop Duo baby diaper bag that attaches directly to either stroller. It makes it so easy to access water bottles, poop bags, treats, people drinks/snacks, etc. Congrats on the new baby and I hope this helped.

  9. Hi,
Does anyone have a used (large ox large) stroller or stroller trailer they’re not using?
My 91 y.o. Lab still has that puppy spirit but her legs go every which way now and this is the only way she can get out for a walk now. I just can’t carry her any more.
Ideally you would be somewhere in the pacific NW near Portland Or. (I’m not sure we have a lot of time for shipping etc) : (
    Thanks!

  10. I have a four year old, three legged bulldog/boxer mix. She’s missing her back leg, and uses a wheelchair to get around. Bacon weighs around 60 pounds and I’m looking for a wheelchair I can jog/skate with her several miles a day, that’s easy to maneuver and folds flat. Any recommendations?

  11. We purchased the Pet Gear Expedition Extra Large Pet Stroller for our corgi Kirby. We purchased this one because he is so long and we wanted him to be able to lay down. However, the front wheels wobble terribly so we ended up taking it back. My husband and I believe its because he’s not heavy enough. This might not be the stroller for you if you have a lighter dog.

  12. We have an 11 yo resque Husky with a front leg amputation, severe osteoporosis, kidney failure, cancer and Ehrlichiosis. She is still a very happy dog but walk more than a few feet is out of the question the past two years. We have the Burley Tailwagon and adore it, so missing that one in this post. We make very long bike rides with our Toyah all year round and in all weather conditions (the Netherlands).
We also use the tail wagon for all her walks, she hops in at our front door and get out when we are at the doggie playground, play and walk a bit, rest some and then when she thinks she is finished jump back into her tail wagon. Toyah is a big heavy Husky but can lay down easily in her tail wagon and the extra features you can buy to use this stroller for all kind of uses makes this stroller the best one ever in our opinion and experience. Really deserving a mention in this post!

  13. We have a tripawd, but it is our older shepherd that has lost the use of both of his rear legs that has the mobility issues. We bought a garden cart at Northern and added a crib mattress and a clip on umbrella – now he can go for walks around the neighborhood with us again.

  14. My 5 year old golden doodle recently had his right back leg amputated after being diagnosed with fibrosarcoma. Thankfully the disease had not spread and he is on the mend, but we are now a month out from his surgery and he’s gotten his energy back and wants to get out and play and I can tell he misses his usual daily walks. He’s doing ok with the walking/hopping but cannot go very far become he’s exhausted and I can tell the remaining back leg is getting tired. He’s 66 lbs and I’m getting him the booyah pet stroller for large dogs. The reviews have me believing this product will be tremendous in getting him out and about again! It’s on sale currently, $200 including shipping. The amazon reviews include photos, I will come back and update after use! Here’s the link: Booyah Large Pet Stroller
