The Best Gear for Your Tripawd

This new Tripawds Gear blog will be dedicated to reviewing and offering nothing but the best products for your three legged dog. Whenever possible, we will write detailed reviews of items we have personally used with Jerry, tried out on Wyatt, or that we have heard worked well for other tripawds.

Stay tuned for complete details about the Web Master harness for helping your tripawd when needed, and the AST Get A Grip harness for less mobile dogs. We’ll also present new Portage and Big Eddy life jackets from Ruff Wear, and much more.

  1. I need help! My bull terrier had his back leg amputated 4 days ago and I am glad to have found your site. I want to purchase the harness which best suits him. Can you suggest which one I should purchase. I am devasted over this but think your gear will help us both become whole again. I want a device for walking by assisting like your video of the shepard you have on site. But my buddy is short and about 50 pounds. I am wanting asap and your advice would be much appreciated. Thank you vicky sullivan

    • Thanks for asking Vicky. The Ruff Wear Webmaster harness is by far the most popular, and the one we recommend for most Tripawds. Just follow the measurement instructions accurately to ensure a proper fit, and review the FAQs regarding how soon after surgery we recommend using the harness.

  2. thank you for your response, and I am going to masure soon. he was a extremely active dog and do you think that I should get several harnesses, one for when he gets cone off and the beginning reabilatation. an one hopefully when he is active again, is there one he should hav for the moe active dog. When I measre him, is it correct I measure his chest and hi belly? Im sorry for acting so uninformed, it wasnt somthing we prepared for. Thanks again vicky

  3. @vicky Just follow the Ruff Wear harness sizing instructions and you should get a perfect fit. Measure the widest part of the rib cage behind the front legs. Many people find it beneficial to have two harness in case one gets soiled, or to have both colors, but we see no other reasons for having two… unless your dog is prone to chewing. Damage by dogs is not covered under Ruff Wear’s warranty. 😉

Please note that we recommend not using the harness until the surgery has completely healed and stitches or staples are removed. We have heard of no specific cases where any harness has hampered healing, but we believe direct pressure from the straps may irritate the wound. Please consult your veterinarian with any concerns.

We suggest using a soft towel slung under the belly if additional support is required in the meantime. A reusable canvas shopping bag slit down the sides also makes a handy temporary sling. You will find much more help, support and advice in the Tripawds discussion forums.

  4. I walk a 65 lb female Lab who has a recurring ACL injury; I’m looking for a harness that I can use to help her walk when she needs it. I worry that the harness I’ve seen will dig into her belly too much. Is there another design to help dogs with hind legs missing? I appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you!

  5. I have a 11 month old 30lb australian shephard mix, front leg amputee- lost her leg at 10 weeks, so she is active and used to having 3 legs, she does everything a regular dog does. However she does need help sometimes with stairs and cars but we do go for walks in the woods and she does lots of tricks, I am not sure which harness would be best for her, the ruffwear web master harness or the tripawd harness? Thank You.

sorry forgot to mention she has no shoulder at all, full front leg amputation. thanks.

  7. I have a 15 month staffy, had his front leg off about 2 months ago following an untreated break (previous owner) he is very strong and energetic. He should be called Houdini. He easily gets out of an ezydog harness that was recommended. Is there any harness that he might not get out of. We live in Australia so it need to be deliverable here. Or any other ideas about keeping a leed on.
